Protected Species Ecology is an independent ecological consultancy based in mid-Wales. It was formed in 2013 by David and Penny Lewns, after 23 years working together as The Badger Consultancy.
Protected Species Ecology carries out general ecological assessments and specialist surveys of protected species. We work throughout the UK for multi-national companies, government bodies and local authorities, as well as individual householders. Over the years, the company has grown to include 5 members of staff and several associates. All our ecologists are members of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), which seeks to maintain high professional standards in the ecological sector.
Our services include Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (also known as Phase 1 surveys), Protected Species Surveys (bat, badger, dormouse, riparian mammals, reptile, great crested newt), Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), and Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) assessments.
We compile European Protected Species (EPS), badger and other licences on behalf of our clients. But we also carry out the licensable work, mitigation and monitoring, so we know firsthand what works and what doesn’t!
Our breadth of practical experience means we are frequently asked to act as Ecological Contractors. We build artificial badger setts and relocate badgers; we design replacement bat roosts, supervise work to roosts and carry out monitoring afterwards. We also carry out a wide range of general ecological supervision, site clearance, translocation, and habitat creation work.
Protected Species Ecology carries Public Liability to £5M and Professional Indemnity Insurance to £2M.
