Protected Species Ecology is an independent ecological consultancy. It was formed in 2013 by David Lewns MCIEEM and Penny Lewns CEcol CEnv MCIEEM, after 23 years working together as The Badger Consultancy.
Protected Species Ecology carries out general ecological assessments and specialist surveys of protected species. We work throughout the UK and Ireland for multi-national companies, government bodies and local authorities, as well as individual householders. Over the years, the company has grown to include 5 members of staff and several associates. All our ecologists are members of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), which seeks to maintain high professional standards in the ecological sector.
Our services include Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA) and Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (aka Phase 1 surveys), Protected Species Surveys (bat, badger, dormouse, riparian mammals, reptile, great crested newt) and Expert Witness statements and appearances.
We compile mitigation strategies and licence applications for European Protected Species (EPS) and badgers on behalf of our clients. But we also carry out the licensable work, mitigation and monitoring, so we know firsthand what works and what doesn’t!
Our breadth of practical experience means we are frequently asked to act as Ecological Contractors. We build artificial badger setts and relocate badgers; we design replacement bat roosts, supervise work to roosts and carry out monitoring afterwards. We also carry out a wide range of general ecological supervision, site clearance, translocation, and habitat creation work.
Protected Species Ecology carries Public Liability to £5M and Professional Indemnity Insurance to £5M.
